Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which was founded in 1953, is one of the first key institutes authorized to confer doctoral and master’s degrees in China. Starting from 2015, graduate education of IMR has been taken over by USTC and therefore School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE, USTC) has been founded. The combination of IMR and USTC in education will strive for further improvement on graduate education.
Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province and the economic, cultural, transportation and trade center of Northeast China. The total population of the city is over 9.1 million. As the host city of 2006 International Horticulture Exposition and venue for the soccer matches of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Shenyang has been the focus of world-wide attention.
