As part of activities to mark the World Corrosion Awareness Day, the international students of Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, paid a visit to the Science and Technology Museum in Shenyang. The International Corrosion Awareness Day was initiated by the World Corrosion Organization (WCO) whose mission is to promote education and best practices in corrosion control for the socio-economic benefit of society, preservation of resources, and protection of the environment.
The primary goals of the World Corrosion Awareness Day and the WCO are;
· To raise public awareness of corrosion and corrosion control,
· To identify world best practices in corrosion management,
· To facilitate the provision of corrosion control expertise to governments, industries, and communities, and
· To normalize corrosion-related standards worldwide.
At the Museum, the international students of IMR witnessed practical, as well as poster demonstration by Chinese teachers and students of IMR geared at creating awareness on corrosion – the deterioration of a metal as a result of chemical reactions between it and the surrounding environment. Children from elementary, middle schools and colleges, and the general public were exposed to the corrosion phenomenon.
For the international students of IMR, it was also an opportunity, amongst other things, to tour the fascinating science and technology exhibitions at the museum – a pointer to China’s advancement in science and technology. The visit ended in style with a 4-dimensional view of a 50-minute documentary onspace exploration by astronauts. Quite an experience, it was!
